Scheck's Place State Forest Campground

The Boardman River hums gently alongside Schecks Place - State Forest, its cool currents brushing against smooth stones as morning light filters through slender maples and oaks. Canoeists and kayakers launch from the main boat ramp just steps from their tents, floating downstream to the horse camping area or paddling back up from Forks State Forest 3.3 miles away. Fishermen find quiet spots along the riverbank or on the wheelchair-accessible fishing deck, where the water rushes past with the promise of brook trout. Schecks Place offers about 30 sites spread across both sides of Brown Bridge Road, with ten clustered near the main boat and canoe launch, and twenty lining the opposite bank. Each space features a fire ring, perfect for evening flames and roasting marshmallows, while clean vault toilets stand ready nearby. Hand pump stations provide potable water, though only the one near the main launch reliably flows—something regulars take in stride. Privacy is sparse here; open clearings mean sites look out over one another, and the road pulses quietly with passing traffic. Yet this openness lends a communal feel, where conversations drift over campfires and kids’ laughter bounces across the river. The camping spots hug the shoreline, and site 29 is a favorite for its proximity to an east-facing kayak launch, offering direct access to the river’s current and a front-row seat to the day’s unfolding.
