Mornings at Indian Flat begin with a quick drive or bike ride to the trailheads that thread into the heart of Yosemite’s grandeur, just nine miles away. The campground’s location lets you slip easily onto CA-140, a gateway road winding past Merced River and through El Portal’s rugged foothills. Days here unfold with hikes along the River Trail or excursions upriver towards the iconic El Capitan cliffs. For those not venturing deep into the park, the nearby Cedar Lodge pools beckon with their refreshing calm after long hours on the trail, while the adjacent restaurant offers a chance to swap stories over hearty meals. Wildlife sightings aren’t uncommon—starlings flit among the trees, and deer occasionally browse near the edges of the campground as evening settles in.

Indian Flat’s tightly packed RV sites challenge even savvy drivers, with narrow parking spots that demand precision and patience. Site 103, in particular, tests maneuvering skills, hemmed in by a tall retaining wall on one side and a large tree on the other, leaving little room to spare for slides. Despite the squeeze, hookups deliver reliable water and electric service, and the clean restrooms and four outdoor-entry showers provide straightforward comfort after dusty days on the trails. The campground’s tent cabins offer a different rhythm: modest wooden cubes furnished with power, WiFi, and mini fridges provide a quiet retreat from the elements, though temperature swings require layering up at night. While the campground hums with activity, the friendly staff ease the tight quarters with helpfulness and local tips, and the nearby motel’s swimming pool offers a welcome splash when the sun climbs high.
